In the past various attempts have been made to influence me to not provide content of open public meeting, which the law allows, I have refused and will continue to refuse as I would hope the rest of the media would also.) He wanted to study setting up “Standing Council Committees”. For the last two years there have been none as all the Committees were Ad Hoc Committee’s of the mayor (Executive Branch) with Council members serving on them, all members chosen by the mayor and he can remove all. It has been thought by some that the Ad Hoc situation created a conflict between the Executive and Legislative Branch and that “Standing Committees” would solve this problem. These Ad Hoc Committee meetings have not been open which to many has presented a problem but the “Standing Council Committees” are required to be open (EMC 2.04.002.F) which is another reason that many want this structure. The members of the “Standing Committees” should be chosen by the Council and not by the mayor and in that way separations of powers are maintained. Some maintain that the mayor may even remove Council members from “Standing Council Committees” because of the wording of EMC 2.04.009.D, but others believe that is not so, that the EMC is flawed as this would not be allowed due to the concept and legal principal of “Separation of Powers”. To better understand, if a Council was so foolish as to pass a law that said that the Mayor could remove a Council member from Council office or that the Council could remove a Mayor from office all would know this was not legal and enforceable and the same apply to “Standing Council Committees”. The mayor tried very hard to maintain his ability to appoint all on whatever committee is setup. It remains to be seen what structure will be created. Will the Council understand the importance of “Separation of Power” and setup “Standing Council Committees” that they decide on, which members will serve on and what citizen will be asked to advise? Come to the next Council meeting Monday January 28, 2008 and see.

I have reason to believe that there is a Planning Commission Meeting scheduled for Monday January 7, 2008 @ 7 pm at the Community Center. Last year I paid to receive packets for this year and believe that I am the only person in Town who has paid but it seems that of the people who are to be furnished packets I am the only one who has not been furnished one. Therefore at this time I cannot furnish the public and this distribution list with the materials. This situation raises in my mind some very interesting questions as to the ability of citizen involvement in their government etc. Since I am posting these materials on my site and emailing out as a free service to the citizens of Eatonville I would think that Town Hall would want to make sure I got these materials as early as possible so they look good instead of this situation. This is a most interesting development and I wonder if the powers that be would not realize that at least some if not most would be reminded of what Harry Truman said “the buck stops here”. Maybe the expectation is that the lack of supplying the packet is not to be known?
